NEWPROTO...Replacement PROTOCOL.CTL for Maximus v2.01wb
I can hear you now... "How do I install these??"
Don't panic. I'm going to walk you through everything as if I was there
with you. I got sick and tired of getting new stuff for Max, just to find
the docs were written so technoid that, unless YOU were the author of the
utility, you couldn't figure out how to use it. Worse yet, SOME utilities
came with little of no docs at all. I just want to make it easy on you to
install this stuff. For once, just "plug and go". I did all the hard work
of pulling my hair out, swearing, staying up late, and spending BIG dough
calling all over to get this stuff assembled into one coehesive file.
If you feel the need to express your appreciation, you can donate a few bucks
to my phone bill. See my address at the bottom of the file.
All I -really- ask is that you, after getting it all installed and working,
drop me a netmail message saying "It's in, and it works. Thanks!".
Those 'atta-boys' keep me from kicking the dog. :-)
Go down this file, STEP BY STEP! You'll have working additional protocols
by the time you get to the end. (Really!) :-)
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
First off, you need HS/LINK, MPT, and GSZ or DSZ. These need to be the
registered versions, or the files will end up in your \MAX directory.
HS/Link will work right without registration.
If you need these files, JUST the files listed below are available as
magic name "NEEDFILE" from Bloom County all times except during ZMH,
which right now (Daylight savings time) is 5-6am, Eastern Standard Time.
If you want the ENTIRE package for each (RECOMMENDED!) so that you have the
DOCS, registration forms, etc, here's the filenames to Freq:
DSZ*.* (*.* is in case there's a new version since this writing...)
GSZ*.*
MPT*.*
HS112.ZIP (I don't recommend a HS*.*, as you may get other, unwanted files)
A Word About Honesty...
═══════════════════════
If you're going to use these protocols, please, pay the guys for their work.
They're making YOUR BBS better... they deserve it! There -are- "breaks" and
"cracks" for these out there, but you're stealing if you use them.
Pure and simple. These protocols are the result of hard work. That work
deserves compensation. Again, please register these protocols.
<stepping off soapbox here...>
Next, get a coffee/soda, light a ciggy, and print this out so you
have it IN YOUR HAND while installing these files.
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
** MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL PROTOCOL.CTL FILE NOW!!! **
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Copy these files into your \MAX directory:
HSLINK.EXE
DSZ.COM (or DSZ.EXE or GSZ.EXE)
MPT.EXE
RDSZ.BAT *
RHSL.BAT *
PROTOCOL.CTL *
(* indicates file included in this archive)
First, check your MAX.CTL file. If, at the very bottom, it does NOT have
"Include Protocol.Ctl", ADD THIS LINE NOW. Save your MAX.CTL.
Read the PROTOCOL.CTL file now. Check for special notes, in particular,
if you're NOT running DesqView, you'll need to remove a couple switches from
the HS/Link command line.
If all checks out ok, re-silt Maximus. ("SILT MAX")
Now we need to turn OFF the internal Maximus Zmodem protocol, as we're adding
our own. Find your .BAT file that actually runs Max. (Mine is RUNMAX.BAT)
Add "-XZ" to the end of the command line to run max.
(EX: max %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 -XZ)
Don't change YOUR command line to match mine, as it might be different.
ONLY add the "-XZ" to yours.
A word about GSZ/DSZ...
═══════════════════════
I like GSZ for it's graphical output during file transfers. It tells you
TONS of information, which can be a help if there's trouble with a user's
session. All the references in the .BAT and .CTL files point to DSZ.
If you, like me, prefer to use GSZ, you have two choices. Change all the
references from DSZ to GSZ, or do what I did... rename GSZ.EXE to DSZ.EXE.
It works fine, so don't worry.
Oh, did I mention that we're done? :-) You now should have the following
WORKING protocols on your BBS:
Xmodem (DSZ)
Ymodem-G (DSZ) <-- You MUST have an error-correcting modem for this to work!
MobyTurbo (DSZ)
Zmodem (DSZ)
MPt/Puma <- Great interface, good throughput.
HS/Link <- Bi-Directional! User can up/download at THE SAME TIME!
If you want to make SURE these are there (and if you followed my instructions
-to the letter-, they are), go to the Max "Offline Reader" menu in your BBS.
Now select "P)rotocol"... See 'em? If not, you missed something and should
retrace your steps through this file.
A word about why you want to install this stuff anyways...
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
I have a SupraFAXModem v.32bis (14400), and I use X00 v1.24 as my fossil,
locked at 38400. In my testing (with another sysop using a PPI 14400) we
attained 3000+cps with bursts up to 7000(!)cps on an uncompressed file.
(an ANSI animation file) With compressed files, you can expect to see
average rates of 1500/1700cps. If you don't have a 16550 UART on your
serial interface, you MAY NOT GET THIS HIGH OF THROUGHPUT!
While these protocols are of value to any sysop, to get the real "soil your
pants" performance, you need to have a v.32bis modem, and a serial card that
has a 16550AFN UART. I don't care what anyone says, you don't need to lock
your port at 57k to get the most out of your system. Many doors will puke
if you attempt to lock higher than 38.4k anyhow.
Remember! You must have an error-correcting modem (v.32bis or v.42bis)
to get the most out of many of these protocols.
Warranty...
═══════════
I guarantee that it works on my system. That's all.
Additional Suggestions...
═════════════════════════
Seeing as how you -cannot- remove the Maximus internal Xmodem (or the
outdated Sealink/Telink protocols), you -may- want to turn the DSZ/GSZ
Xmodem into Xmodem OverThruster, to make it a little special.
See the GSZ or DSZ docs on how to do that. (I didn't bother with it...)
Thank you's and general bootlicking...
══════════════════════════════════════
I'd like to thank the sysops who sent me the bits and pieces of this which
started all my frustrations installing these externals. Without them, I
never could have assembled this file. (Max sysops are the most helpful
group of people you could ever want to deal with!)
And some Max sysops in the Detroit area...
Gary Weinfurther for suggesting the little things, like the DesqView
switches, and just generally letting me lean on him when Max gets me
confused. Without him, I'd still be wondering how to set up FrontDoor,
Max, and Squish. He's a God-like being in my book! :-)
...and Steve Quarrella. It was HIS constant pestering about installing this
stuff that bugged me enough to get it all together. It was either install
these, or kill Steve. Steve spent literally -hours- up and downloading,
using each protocol, to assure it all worked. Steve is The Bloom County
BBS's biggest supporter, (next to Gary) even though he has his own system to
deal with, and never let me down when I needed him to babysit the BBS when I
was on tour. Steve's just moved to Utah (poor sod), so pay him a visit when
he gets back in the nodelist.
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Special thanks to Scott Dudley. I searched for a YEAR for what software I
was going to use when I moved my BBS from an Apple IIgs platform to a MS/DOS
box. Maximus won hands-down! Scott... don't let us guys bug you too much.
We love our Max systems, and you're our guru. That's why we turn to you
for everything. Thanks for being understanding those times when you just
want to scream "Read the damned manual, you morons!" :-)
